Kentucky Utilities Company (KU) is based right in Lexington. It serves customers in 77 Kentucky counties. It was founded in 1912, and today it is owned by Pennsylvania Power & Light (PPL), based in Allentown, PA. It serves over 512,000 Kentucky customers. KU has a maximum generation capacity of 4,570 megawatts. KU provides an option for residential customers to add “green energy” payments to their bill. The utility then purchases “green tagged” renewable energy, thus furthering the cause of sustainability.

Columbia Gas is one of nine energy-distribution companies owned by Ni-Source, a Fortune 500 company traded on the NYSE. Columbia Gas is headquartered right in Lexington. From its Lexington home office, it serves about 130,000 customers in 31 Kentucky counties. Columbia Gas actively supports the “Customer Choice” program that makes it possible for residential customers to purchase natural gas from non-utility suppliers.

KAW assures the delivery of high quality water to its 490,000 Kentucky customers by conducting about 15,000 water tests every year. The utility screens for a total of 100 possible contaminants. Kentucky American Water follows very strict Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that help to ensure the delivery of high quality drinking water. KAW is often many years ahead of the industry in general when it comes to implementing the latest regulations.

The water utility also developed educational programs designed to educate its customers in wise water usage. The utility operates under the strict guidance of the Kentucky Public Service Commission. Rates increases are carefully regulated, and they are subject to public review.

Lexington’s Division of Water Quality both operates and maintains the sanitary sewer system for most of Lexington-Fayette County. This overall sewer system has 81 pump stations, about 1,400 miles of sewer line, as well as two wastewater treatment plants — West Hickman and the Town Branch. It also maintains over 28,000 manhole covers.
